I swear, like clockwork, we get this question nearly every month. What is the secret to writing something different from me? There are no secrets, there is no guides, no quick lists of what all Korean-Americans are like (because no one works that way). Don’t treat characters like they’re some unfathomable other, because they’re not, they’re human beings like you and me and anyone else.

Why are you worried about writing a stereotypical caricature? Is it because that’s all you know? Change that. Consume media written by Korean-Americans, realize that being Korean-American will effect who he is just like your background effects who you are, and make sure your characters are human beings.

Worried about white-washing history? Read history. There’s lots of it out there, by Korean-Americans, and it’s easily accessible on the internet. Go to museums, check out books assigned in Asian American studies. They exist, you’re just not looking for them.

Stop being afraid of writing POC characters because “you might get it wrong.” Do type the questions you just asked me into google, and start from there. Do realize that your characters are human, share the same interests and motivations as everyone else, and should be treated as such. .

"So there’s a lot of silence about it, there’s a lot of tip-toeing, but we need to point out how these artists are really middle-men, that the big winners here are the industry. That they’re making money off of the deeply, destructive representations of black people, especially black women that is unprecedented. If Puffy’s got 400 million we know that the industry at large is making hundreds of millions of dollars off of these representations."

How though? I’m not disagreeing or anything just someone explain how it’s an act of violence because I don’t really get it, I assumed violence was people being beaten up or shot in the street. I don’t know much about trans issues and I’m new to this subject.

http://tranarchism.com/2011/04/26/guest-post-why-misgendering-is-bad/

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbal_abuse

Misgendering a trans woman, especially a woman of color like ms. Cox, puts us in seriously physical danger. The world is a very, very dangerous place for trans women, and outting us is just amplifying that danger

Also you’re a shitty person with ZERO respect or consideration for others if you do.

BTW, if you want to know more about trans people, how about not following anti-SJers that regularly harass trans people and make our lives even more shit?

Jane Elliot is the fucking truth

she goes “i know this maybe hard for you because white males are accustomed to telling people things not listening to people so let me break it down for you”

i have died and she has resurrected me

There was a time in the early 90’s where people were really talking about race and what it meant to be black.

The Fire Still Burns

In the instances when POC say shit like ‘Oh I can’t stand white folk’ or ‘Damn white people’, they aren’t saying ‘Oh I think they are inferior, I want to humiliate them, abuse them, enslave them and wipe out their people!’, they’re saying ‘Damn, after a couple hundred years of white people thinking I’m inferior, humiliating me, abusing me, enslaving me, and trying to wipe out my people, I don’t wanna deal with them.’ The context is completely different.

White privilege is to be able to quote Martin Luther King Jr. (only certain parts, of course) in order to silence people of color.  To use his legacy as an excuse to treat people like crap, because dammit, we’re all “equal” (but some are more equal than others, right) now and blah people should stop complaining!  And yet there’s silence when its time to recall the struggle and hatred he worked so hard against.

Newsflash: Non violent resistance is still resistance, and he didn’t work so that you can maintain your privilege at any cost, mm’kay?

Racebent LotR: The Elves

Lord Elrond of Rivendell—Peter Mensah

Arwen Undómiel—Estella Daniels

Lord Celeborn—Daniel Dae Kim

Lady Galadriel—Indira Varma

Legolas Thranduillion—Jesse Williams

Haldir of the Galadhrim—Paolo Montalban

I’m here for all of this. ESPECIALLY Arwen.

This doesnt make any fucking sense stop it.
I know you people are obsessed with having PoC in everything but thats not the setting of the books.
For fucks sake.

image

first of all here is a fantastic bit from the great Wyatt Cenac as to why your argument is totally invalid!

“stop it”? “i know you people are obsessed with having poc in everything”? could you be any more… wow, whats the word im looking for… ignorant is too cliche. dense? daft? i dont know, but obviously you have never experienced a lack of representation in the media. obviously you have no clue what its like to grow up and rarely see people who look like you and are set in a positive light. i reckon youve hardly even entertained the thought, otherwise youd have a fucking lick of compassion for poc representation. you would be more open to even the idea, literally the harmless fancasting of poc for a book written by an incredibly privileged white guy in the 30’s/40’s. (not to mention racist, which- surprise! is what makes this so refreshing.)

is a socially outdated books adaptation more important than considering being inclusive to all races of actors? what, would that ruin the story? taint it for you? NO, and if it did youd just straight up be a fucking racist and not just an ignorant kid. is it more important to have white elves, white dwarves, white hobbits, white COMPLETELY NORMAL FANTASY HUMAN BEINGS than any kind of poc- for the sake of the MILLIONS of poc (most importantly, children) who see these movies? (i’m talking about the “good guys” here, don’t even get me started on how the only poc in the books were INHERENTLY EVIL.)

of course it isnt. so you stop, and consider what threatens you so much about this that you had to go and say something so fucking stupid. or just get mad and unfollow me, that works too. bottom line: if the movie adaptations had gone the route of this post and cast at least one LotR race with poc, the movies would have tenfolded the cultural relevance and significance of the story in comparison to those precious books. oh yeah, baby. i went there.

THE LAST AIRBENDER HAD WHITE PEOPLE IT DID NOT STICK TO THE CARTOONS. And all these white people came up with 10000000000 excuses.

POC can’t be in your fantasy worlds and we can’t be in ours either? Fuck that and fuck you.

White people ain’t got shit to complain about for movies.

After Seven Years, Dutch Diplomat Couple Returns their Adopted Korean Daughter
Raymond Poeteray, vice consul at the Dutch Consulate General in Hong Kong, and his wife, Meta, adopted baby “Jade” from South Korea in 2000 at the age of four months. The couple believed themselves to be infertile at the time.
The diplomat’s wife subsequently conceived two biological children. The couple then left their eight-year-old adopted daughter in foster care, claiming she was never able to integrate into their family, and that “it was difficult to raise her because of culture shock.”
Upon the child’s abandonment in Hong Kong, officials discovered that the parents never registered the child as a citizen or even a resident, and she had no legal status or protection under the Dutch, Hong Kong, or Korean governments.

Oh poor baby. :( That is just so fucked up. Fucking white people.

and this is why white people should be stringently watched when adopting PoC babbies.

This couple was also in the news earlier this year accused of espionage which…I can’t say I’m shocked actually to find out that they are morally bankrupt.
