mybeautiful-distraction asked: I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something so I'm just going to ask. How are the words "infant son" coercive gendering? Is it because by assuming white women will fear him (is it okay to say him?) she is assuming he will grow up to look and dress unmistakably male? I feel like I would have been confused if it said "daughter". White women don't generally fear me. Is it because she made me assume her child had a penis? Is it designations like son or daughter? Should she have only said "infant"?
It’s because calling her child “son” just because they have a penis might coerce the child into identifying as male. It’s a concept that completely ignores the cultural and economic barriers some have to gender neutral child rearing.
