Dion the Socialist: Freelance for The Black Kids Table and get your dream job one day (maybe) -
People are always talking about how annoying it is that you have to have experience to get a job, but you have to have the job to get experience, so here’s your opportunity to get some experience while doing the stuff you are already doing anyway.
The Black Kids Netwerk is a conglomerate of social media bullshit aimed at tickling the fancies of intelligent black twenty-somethings. Our combined network is over 40,000 followers with tens of thousands of unique hits daily. I am freelancers to join our SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM. This is unpaid for now, but a bunch of people who started with unpaid freelance work for Tumblr just made a shit ton of money last week. I’m not promising that will happen with us, but the experience here will certainly look promising on a resume.

Applicants for these positions are expected to create/aggregate content, grow the userbase, and participate in team-directed initiatives. That all sounds real fucking professional, doesn’t it? Now imagine that shit being on your resume next time you apply for a job.

garagemartyr asked: Curiosity: You say no submissions from white people. Cool. If they don't have a picture, do you just guess? Or assume they're not if the submission is relevant enough? Or like, hunt through their posts and try to figure out if they are a PoC? Sorry if that came off as condescending or glib, you maybe don't give a fuck, I was just curious. I'll go back to my quiet observance now.
Uh, if they look white in their icon, we don’t take it. I don’t know about the other mods, but I delete submissions that don’t come from someone who is obviously a person of color.
Language is never neutral.

Fantastic Fandom: Superheroes, Film Casting, Racism, and You -
I’m particularly glad to have this piece on The Black Kids Table and to have this writer contributing to the site now. JGalette examines racism in the comic book fandom.
As always, if you have a unique perspective on issues in blackness, The Black Kids Table would like to hear from you.
“Sometimes when I take a step back and look at these books that I enjoyed as a child and still enjoy, as best I can, I realize that I rarely see a face that looks like mine. That these things I love so much possess a fandom and are being put out by an industry that’s easily as toxic as the rest of society and I ask myself why. Why even bother? Why do any of us even bother?
And I tell myself it’s because these characters mean something more, that they represent more than what the worst of the people who fuel their existence creatively and economically are so keen to put out into the ether.
I tell myself that if Johnny, Sue and the rest of the Fantastic Four could leap from the pages they’d give all their racist fans such a talking to, that they’d make them understand why they were wrong and that they needed to change their ways. But they aren’t real and they can’t do that.
And the sad thing is, no matter what I write about this subject, I know I can’t either.”
is thisiswhiteprivilege actually aware that there are countries outside the US or
because no matter who points this out [white or poc] and how politely they frame it they never seem to have any response beyond “lol ur dumb”
Oops assuming your US worldview to be universal is problematic
We receive readers and submissions from over fifty different countries around the world on every continent except Antarctica. This has always been our response to this inquiry.
White privilege is not having to hear your boyfriends parents whisper to him, “so you couldn’t find a nice white girl?” behind your back.

White privilege is not being told to marry a white man because of phrases and mentalities like “adelantar la raza” when you’re only 8 years old.

White privilege is not sitting in a classroom filled with over 50 people in one of the top universities in North America, if not the world, and having every eye in the room turn to you when the topic of illegal immigration is brought up.

White privilege is being so fucking entitled that you think you’re doing p.o.c. a favor when you gentrify our neighborhoods and claim to “spread word of our culture by bringing more white people to the neighborhood.” Fuck off, my culture isn’t for you.

fuckyeahhfandoms asked: I saw a post of yours claiming there is no racism against white people. I dunno if you're just talking about the USA or not but here in Australia, the indigenous folk receive so many benefits from the Government it's ridiculous. And I consider THAT to be racism AGAINST white people. Thoughts?
You’re so wrong jesus is having the second coming tonight to tell you to stahp.
White privilege is telling your your two POC roommates racism doesn’t exist while invalidating their experiences to coincidence. And then to negate the association with you means negating the association of all white America. All you have to do as a white person is say that it doesn’t exist and everyone is supposed to believe it doesn’t.

1. Sit it out sometimes
There’s a sect of black bloggers who will forever be on the lookout for other black bloggers to excommunicate. They do this because it gives them a feeling of ownership and authority over the black anti-racist community. It seems as if every time they go after one of their own, their clout and influence gets a little stronger. I felt that pressure. After every mass call-out, it seemed like there was a roll call taken and anyone who wasn’t showing out with the group is assumed to have been on the side of the racists.
“And remember that time sixteen weeks ago when that white guy said Beyonce was overrated? Where was you then, nigga?”
I felt like I had to be involved in every little thing that went down, no matter how slight the beef was or how little it had to do with me. I felt that if I wasn’t visibly and vocally on board with every battle against the most-digusting-racist-I’ve-ever-encountered of the week, then I wasn’t doing all I could do to fight against racism.
No one is capable of maintaining that level of engagement though. That’s why you need to know that it’s okay to sit out once in awhile, or twice in awhile, or however often you want. There was a time when I felt as if no matter how depressed or anxious I was, I had to willingly expose myself to the voices of the white supremacists and neo-nazis, not because I was in the mood to humor them, but because I didn’t want anyone to ever be able to say Dion wasn’t there fighting. It’s easy to forget that the anti-racist community exists for the sake of people of color, not for the sake of the community itself.
These days, I sit out a lot, and by that I mean almost 100% of the time. That’s not to say I don’t write about racism, but I don’t engage anyone in debates on my humanity. I’ve realized there’s no benefit in it for me. That kind of thing has a place, but not everyone is cut out for it. That doesn’t make them any better or any worse: just different.

goobsyplz asked: If you want to see racism, look at how the Irish have been treated both in America and their home country for the past several centuries. Every group has experienced shit. Stop acting like being black somehow makes you special.
Shhhh.
This has been bothering me lately. People come to attack us or whine in our face they always bring up that we’re black. They stopped attacking what we say cause they visit the home page and see “black boggers”. Suddenly it’s “ohh you do a,b,c cause you’re black!!11”. I mean wut? Okay? Did I fucking say being black makes me special?
I purposely say POC because not everyone who submits to this blog is black. Like, do I have to write it on my fucking face that this blog is perpetuated by the submissions of people of color?
Oh but I digress you were talking about the Irish right? I think you’re conflating race with ethnicity.

Retracted the “panties in a bunch” statement from last night. That’s misogynistic language and I should’ve known better. Fullest apologies.
Tim Wise got all salty about us on his Facebook today. Typical cracker is typical. A white guy calling a bunch of black people ignorant and basically claiming reverse racism? And THIS is the leading voice of anti racism (for white people) in America?
