This... is White Privilege

75-year-old Pakistani man killed by a white man with a machete in Birmingham two weeks ago. Barely any media coverage -

This is White Privilege is now on twitter @thisiswhitepriv

Big thanks to the two new members of the Black Kids Table Netwerk who will be adminning the Twitter account, and a huge thanks to Sushi. When I had my mental breakdown, she kept this blog going. I still consider This is White Privilege to be my baby, but Sushi has long been the one really running things. So let’s all congratulate her on her new nifty professional sounding title:

The Black Kids Table Netwerk Associate Editor: Director of Content for This is White Privilege.

Sushi will be taking the reigns in leading the direction of the new Twitter and making sure the Tumblr keeps going strong as well. Congrats to her!

And while I’m hyping new shit, The Black Kids Table is on Twitter (@blackkidstable) and on Tumblr (blackkidstable.tumblr.com).

White privilege is not seeing the problem with the director of study abroad at your university telling you that you should go to Mexico for the year because you obviously know Spanish because of your last name and the color of your skin.

White privilege is not being the reference race when other college kids say “I have tons of [insert minority race here] friends”

#1484

White privilege is not being asked basic common sense questions in college because the professor assumes you grew up in the projects and made it here on the “Black” ticket.

White privilege is not being told that speaking about the fact that discrimination exists is an “inappropriate conversation” and “not fit to have said conversation” with a predominately minority class, because the white people feel threatened, and discriminated against, the way any POC does every day.

White privilege is looking at a sheet of  eight characters sketched in black white, all of whom clearly have their race listed (two mixed South Asian, one Chinese, one Maori), and saying that they need to be colored because otherwise anyone looking at them will assume they’re all white. A blank sheet with no skin color does not mean white and characters don’t have to dress in their traditional outfits in order to look non-white. Jeans and t-shirts are not limited to white people alone.

fukanzu replied your post Uh, if they look white in their icon, we don’t take it. I don’t know about the other mods, but I delete submissions that don’t come from someone who is obviously a person of color.

wow that’s hypocritical. if they “look white” in their icon? what if their icon isn’t them? but, even more importantly, you do NOT get to decide who qualifies as a person of color. i can’t even begin to fathom how wrong this is.

Unless we can start doing genetic testing on every person who submits or sending out our questionnaire for every submission, then there’s no way we’re ever going to be able to accurately guess who’s a POC and who’s white with 100% accuracy, but we refuse to let white people have a voice on this medium, so if there’s the slightest chance a submitter is not a person of color, I personally will not read their submission.

Dion the Socialist: Freelance for The Black Kids Table and get your dream job one day (maybe) -

dionthesocialist:

People are always talking about how annoying it is that you have to have experience to get a job, but you have to have the job to get experience, so here’s your opportunity to get some experience while doing the stuff you are already doing anyway.

The Black Kids Netwerk is a conglomerate of social media bullshit aimed at tickling the fancies of intelligent black twenty-somethings. Our combined network is over 40,000 followers with tens of thousands of unique hits daily. I am freelancers to join our SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM. This is unpaid for now, but a bunch of people who started with unpaid freelance work for Tumblr just made a shit ton of money last week. I’m not promising that will happen with us, but the experience here will certainly look promising on a resume.

Current needs:

Applicants for these positions are expected to create/aggregate content, grow the userbase, and participate in team-directed initiatives. That all sounds real fucking professional, doesn’t it? Now imagine that shit being on your resume next time you apply for a job.

Requirements:

If you’re interested in any of these positions, email me at dion@theblackkidstable.com

garagemartyr asked: Curiosity: You say no submissions from white people. Cool. If they don't have a picture, do you just guess? Or assume they're not if the submission is relevant enough? Or like, hunt through their posts and try to figure out if they are a PoC? Sorry if that came off as condescending or glib, you maybe don't give a fuck, I was just curious. I'll go back to my quiet observance now.

Uh, if they look white in their icon, we don’t take it. I don’t know about the other mods, but I delete submissions that don’t come from someone who is obviously a person of color.

Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can mobilize an entire society in violent hate against me.

Fantastic Fandom: Superheroes, Film Casting, Racism, and You -

I’m particularly glad to have this piece on The Black Kids Table and to have this writer contributing to the site now. JGalette examines racism in the comic book fandom.

As always, if you have a unique perspective on issues in blackness, The Black Kids Table would like to hear from you.

“Sometimes when I take a step back and look at these books that I enjoyed as a child and still enjoy, as best I can, I realize that I rarely see a face that looks like mine. That these things I love so much possess a fandom and are being put out by an industry that’s easily as toxic as the rest of society and I ask myself why. Why even bother? Why do any of us even bother?

And I tell myself it’s because these characters mean something more, that they represent more than what the worst of the people who fuel their existence creatively and economically are so keen to put out into the ether.

I tell myself that if Johnny, Sue and the rest of the Fantastic Four could leap from the pages they’d give all their racist fans such a talking to, that they’d make them understand why they were wrong and that they needed to change their ways. But they aren’t real and they can’t do that.

And the sad thing is, no matter what I write about this subject, I know I can’t either.”

is thisiswhiteprivilege actually aware that there are countries outside the US or

because no matter who points this out [white or poc] and how politely they frame it they never seem to have any response beyond “lol ur dumb”

Oops assuming your US worldview to be universal is problematic

We receive readers and submissions from over fifty different countries around the world on every continent except Antarctica. This has always been our response to this inquiry.

White privilege is not sitting in a classroom filled with over 50 people in one of the top universities in North America, if not the world, and having every eye in the room turn to you when the topic of illegal immigration is brought up.
